Maca root is a cruciferous plant native to the highlands of Peru. It has been used for thousands of years by native Peruvians living at 14,000 feet above sea level to promote vitality, sexuality, and hormone balance in men and women.

In 2014, China bought the entire Peruvian Maca crop. They took Maca seeds to China and planted 25,000 acres at a much lower altitude than in Peru. Chinese Maca (often labeled Peruvian Maca) is weaker and simply does not work. As a result, up to 80% of all Maca sold in U.S. originates in China.
Now for the whole truth! Peruvians cultivate about 6,000 acres of Maca roots, planted at high elevations (around 14,000 feet above sea level) where Maca thrives. Organic Maca roots that are grown and processed in Peru are the only kind of Maca roots that will ever be use in Royal Maca.
For centuries, Maca roots have been bio-energetically grown and harvested according to the rhythms of the moon, plus planted and harvested with prayers.
The traditional and natural way of “finishing” the Maca roots by sun-drying before storage, has recently been scientifically validated. Sun-drying for 6-8 weeks allows a large percentage of glucosinolates (natural pungent elements found in Maca roots) to convert to isothiocyanates (small molecules which are important for hormone balancing). The “fast dry” commercial tumbler dryer do not permit this conversion, resulting in a very weak final Maca product.
Maca roots come in a variety of skin colors, yet the inside of all Maca roots are cream-colored. When seeds from a Maca root of any color are planted, this results in Maca roots of many skin colors. Native Peruvians do not separate the roots by color, knowing that all the colors offer a wide range of health benefits.
Maca must be cooked.
Raw Maca root contains enzymes that are toxic enough to cause serious stomach and intestinal distress. It also has proven ineffective for hormone balancing. In Peru, Maca root is usually boiled and never eaten raw.
To preserve the secondary metabolites created during sun-drying that are responsible for the hormone-balancing effects of Royal Maca, uses an extrusion process called gelatinization. This involves heating the dried Maca roots under pressure for a few seconds. This form of cooking eliminates toxic enzymes found in raw Maca and reduces carbohydrate content by 50%, producing a potent powder concentrate.
There is no middle man suppliers, this Maca comes from the same five Maca growing communities since 1998. Our Maca roots are also grown organically in composted soil. Each lot of this Maca powder has a name and a face attached to it.
